The object-oriented paradigm and the distributed systems paradigm share many conceptual bases. It appears synergistic to merge the two sets of concepts into an Object-Oriented Distributed System (OODS) paradigm. The object-oriented concepts provide encapsulation and an extensible structure to the distributed systems paradigm. Meanwhile, the distributed systems concepts add to the object-oriented paradigm the ability to distribute objects across multiple machines. This paper reviews the definitions of parallel and distributed systems and of object-oriented systems before discussing the characteristics of object-oriented distributed systems. Language and system level support fort he OODS concepts are also discussed.
