Further Information

Platelet kinetic parameters predict the efficiency of splenectomy in patients with immune thrombocytopenia. The multiple hit model is recommended to calculate the mean platelet survival time. This method involves complex formulae and iterative calculations that need specialized software, but currently available programs present some drawbacks. A new optimized solution is proposed. A Python 3 based computer program was developed in order to perform the multiple-hit model calculations. Validation was done by comparing its results to two additional programs, one using the Microsoft Excel solver add-in and the other fitting the curve by brute force. There was no difference in the results obtained by the three programs. The brute force program however took much longer times to achieve the results. The new program proved to be a fast, robust solution to determine the multiple-hit parameters needed to assess platelet kinetics.
